The 32nd shuttle mission to the International Space Station, STS-130, left planet Earth on February 8, 2010. Its early morning launch to orbit from Kennedy Space Center’s pad 39A followed the long, graceful, eastward arc seen in this 2 minute time exposure.

Sakurajima Volcano Lightning

Why does a volcanic eruption sometimes create lightning?
Pictured above, the Sakurajima volcano in southern Japan was caught erupting. Magma bubbles so hot they glow shoot away as liquid rock bursts through the Earth’s surface from below.
The above image is particularly notable, however, for the lightning bolts caught near the volcano’s summit. Why lightning occurs even in common thunderstorms remains a topic of research, and the cause of volcanic lightning is even less clear.

Venus of Paris
The romance and mystery of the night glitters as Venus, known in Greek mythology as the Goddess of Love, appears serenely beside the sparkling Eiffel Tower. Like many other major cities, night-time streetscape view of Paris, a metropolitan flooded with lights, does not show many stars.
